At our first class, we decided to read Robert Jewett's St. Paul Returns to the Movies as our study. This Sunday we'll be looking at the first chapter which is an introduction to the themes of honor and shame in Paul's letters. The first three movies, in order are (this book was published in 1999), The Prince of Tides, Babette's Feast, and Forest Gump. Join us!

Greening of Detroit

The Greening of Detroit is an organization committed to the reforestation of Detroit through planting trees and educational programs.

They have planting every weekend through fall. We can take on a larger committment if we want and organize our own event and adopt the trees planted there for three years, but I thought it might be nice start off by participating in a pre-planned tree planting. I was hoping to have more info by now but I haven't received an email back from the Greening of Detroit people yet.

I just found out about a really neat project that's happening, and based on our experience with Habitat for Humanity, I know you'll want to be involved!

It's called Urban Farming and it works like this:
Urban Farming is a non-profit charity that began in Detroit and now has branches in LA, NYC, St. Louis, Hawaii, Jamaica, and more. In our area, they have many gardens in Detroit, but also in Oakland County as well. Urban Farming is spearheaded by two Detroiters and their main goal is to eradicate hunger. They do this by transforming abandoned lots into thriving gardens. They bring different communities (faith-based organizations, civic groups, and schools) together to plant, maintain and harvest the garden. Anyone hungry can take food from the garden at any time, but most is harvested and given to Forgotten Harvest, the main local distributor of food for the area food banks. So in addition to eradicating hunger, they are also decreasing urban blight, building communities, and making a positive difference in greenhouse gas emissions by gardening organically and keeping the food distribution local.

Interested in what a FIF class is like? Here's a recap from this week and announcements about our upcoming session:

We had planned to watch a DVD this week but since it hasn't arrived yet, we
did something else. As a follow-up to our study of psalms in over the past
weeks, we took at look at some randomly assigned poetical passages from
elsewhere in the Bible. We looked at passages from Exodos, Amos, Isaiah,
Job, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Luke, and even some passages from the
apocryphal books Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach, and the Song of the Three from
the additions to Daniel in the apocrypha. Next week Paul is bringing snacks

Judson Center Bag Drives Re-cap

I just wanted to thank everyone who participated in the Judson Center bag drives for kids. First, we gathered 10 overnight duffle bags for abused children who have been removed from their homes. Most recently, we provided backpacks full of school supplies for foster children who are going back to school from a new home this Fall. Together, we have the ability to make a positive impact on these childrens' lives. Thanks to all of you for being servants of Christ!

Please join us for a mid-summer garden party on the ROFUM grounds. We will have a brief tutorial on caring for the portion of the ROFUM garden we've adopted -along with some weeding and watering (we're talking a half-hour tops on this if we all pitch in). Then a fun-for-all game of croquet and possibly bocce ball, too! We can also partake of the treats across the street at Jimi's Ice Cream Pallis - so be sure to save room for dessert. I hope you all can make it - it should be a blast!
